A fresh chapter in Indian cricket has begun. After weeks of speculation following Rohit Sharma’s surprise retirement from Test cricket, the BCCI has named Shubman Gill as the new Test captain.
The 25-year-old from Punjab is now India’s 37th Test skipper, one of the youngest ever, stepping into a role once held by legends like Kapil Dev, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, and Sachin Tendulkar.
Gill's appointment isn't just symbolic — it's a statement of intent. Indian cricket is officially handing over the reins to the next generation.
A Captain in Transition
India’s Test squad is currently in flux. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are no longer around — the former retired, the latter unavailable. Longtime spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin has also stepped away, and Mohammed Shami remains sidelined due to injuries.
While stars like Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammad Siraj provide experience in the bowling unit, the core batting lineup is young and largely untested in tough overseas conditions.
This young team, led by an equally young captain, faces an uphill battle right away — a five-match Test series against England in June 2025. India hasn't won a Test series in England since 2007. To make things harder, England’s aggressive Bazball strategy promises to test even the most seasoned captains.
Why Gill?
The choice wasn’t straightforward. Many thought Jasprit Bumrah — vice-captain in past series — would take the reins. But the concerns over his workload during a grueling five-Test tour led the selectors in a different direction.
Instead, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and senior board officials decided to invest in long-term leadership.
“Gill is a young man we are investing in not just for one series, but for the next five-six years to take Indian cricket ahead," said Agarkar.

Shubman Gill’s journey to the top has been carefully cultivated and closely watched.
Born in Punjab, he made headlines at just 14, scoring a mammoth 351 runs in a school tournament — part of a record-breaking opening stand. His father moved the family to Mohali to give Gill better training opportunities, a gamble that paid off.
He rose swiftly through the ranks. As vice-captain in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, he was India’s top scorer, even smashing an unbeaten 102 against Pakistan in the semi-final. While Prithvi Shaw — then captain — drew early media attention, it was Gill who quietly emerged as the more stable long-term prospect.
After strong domestic performances and mentorship from Yuvraj Singh, Gill earned his Test debut in 2020 in Melbourne, during the historic India-Australia series comeback. His crisp strokes and elegant technique quickly won him fans. Nicknamed the "Prince", he was seen as the heir to Virat Kohli’s batting legacy.
But that legacy still awaits. Though Gill has shown promise, his 1,893 runs in 32 Tests so far are good — not great. Critics say he’s yet to truly dominate in the longest format.
From IPL Captain to National Leader
While Gill's Test captaincy comes sooner than expected, he already has leadership experience. He’s currently captaining Gujarat Titans in the IPL, gaining valuable exposure to team management, pressure handling, and tactical awareness.
Still, leading India in a five-Test away series is a far cry from franchise T20 cricket. England’s Bazball strategy will push India’s bowlers and field placements to the limit. Success or failure in this series could define Gill’s early captaincy legacy.
The Bigger Picture: A New WTC Cycle
This England series isn’t just about winning or losing — it kicks off India’s campaign in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. India has made the last two WTC finals but failed to win either. Recent form hasn’t been encouraging either, with series defeats to New Zealand and Australia raising alarm bells.
If India wants to re-establish itself as the dominant force in Test cricket, Gill’s leadership and batting must shine.
He’ll also need to build a new team culture. With the absence of vocal leaders like Kohli and Rohit, Gill must develop his own voice, earn trust in the dressing room, and lead by example — all while scoring runs.
